How our currency converter works
This tool converts money using the European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates — the official mid-market rates the ECB publishes every working day at around 16:00 CET. For pairs that don't involve the euro (say USD to INR), the rate is calculated by cross-converting through the euro, exactly how banks and data providers derive their cross rates.
Because these are mid-market rates — the midpoint between the buy and sell price — they represent the real value of a currency before any margin is added. Rates refresh on ECB business days; they don't move on weekends or European public holidays.
Why your bank or app gives you a different rate
The number here is the mid-market rate. The rate your bank, airport counter, or card network actually gives you is usually 1–4% worse, because they add a markup (spread) on top of the mid-market rate and may charge a separate fee. That gap is how they make money on the exchange.
Use this converter to see the real, unmarked-up value first — then you can judge how much any provider is charging you and shop for a better deal, especially on large transfers.
How to read an exchange rate
An exchange rate is always a pair, like USD/INR = 83. The first currency (USD) is the base; the second (INR) is the quote. It means 1 US dollar equals 83 Indian rupees. To convert the other way, divide instead of multiply: ₹1,000 ÷ 83 ≈ $12.05.
Enter any amount above and switch the two currencies to see both directions instantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these live, real-time exchange rates?
They're the official European Central Bank reference rates, updated every ECB working day at around 16:00 CET. They aren't tick-by-tick trading rates, but they are the same trusted daily benchmark used across banking and finance. Rates don't update on weekends or European holidays.
Why is this rate different from what my bank offers?
This is the mid-market rate — the real midpoint value with no markup. Banks, money changers, and card networks typically add a 1–4% margin plus fees, so the rate you actually receive is a little worse. The difference is their profit on the exchange.
Is this the exact rate I'll get when I exchange money?
No — treat it as the benchmark. Your provider's rate will include their spread and any fees. Use this figure to measure how competitive a provider's offer really is, especially for large amounts.
What is the mid-market rate?
It's the midpoint between the buy and sell price of a currency on the global market — the fairest single number for what a currency is worth. It's the same rate you'll see on Google, Reuters, and the ECB.
Which currencies can I convert?
Over 37 major world currencies, including USD, EUR, GBP, INR, JPY, AED, CAD, AUD, CNY and more. Pick your two currencies and enter an amount to convert either direction.
